The Research Crisis We Must Face

Africa Holds 18% of the World's People.
Yet Produces Less Than 2% of Its Knowledge.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to over 1.4 billion people — a vast, brilliant, resource-rich continent teeming with unsolved problems and untapped minds. Yet when the world publishes its science, its medicine, its economic models, its innovations — Africa is barely present.

According to peer-reviewed research published in The Lancet and UNESCO's Science Reports, Sub-Saharan Africa — with 13.5% of the global population — accounts for less than 1% of global research output. In 2008, the entire continent of Africa produced approximately 27,000 published papers — the same number as the Netherlands alone, a country of just 17 million people.

Africa contributes only 1.01% of global research and development expenditure, while Europe contributes 27%, Asia 31%, and North America 37%. Most African governments spend less than 1% of their GDP on research, with some spending as little as $0.56 per capita per year.

"How can a continent rise above the level of its contribution, collaboration, and competencies? If Africa keeps following the business-as-usual approach — we are following a blueprint for disaster."

The consequences are severe and deeply personal. When African researchers do not publish, Africa's diseases get studied by outsiders. Africa's agricultural challenges get modelled by foreign economists. Africa's children get taught through curricula built for other contexts. Our problems are defined by people who do not live them.

AREC 2026 exists to change this — not gradually, not incrementally — but boldly, at scale, starting now.

What the Research Gap Costs Africa

When Africa Doesn't Publish,
Africa Doesn't Lead.

The research deficit is not an academic problem. It is a human problem. It shows up in our hospitals, our classrooms, our economies, our governments, and our place on the world stage.

🏥

Health Systems in Crisis

Nigeria has 1 doctor per 9,000 people — the WHO minimum is 1 per 600. Africa has 18% of the world's people but only 3% of its health workforce. Diseases that affect Africa most are researched least by Africans.

✈️

The Brain Drain Accelerates

70,000 skilled Africans leave the continent every year. One in nine Africans with a tertiary education lives abroad. In Cameroon, 1 in 3 medical graduates left the country last year. Nigeria lost 9,000 doctors between 2016–2018.

🔬

"Helicopter Science" — Research Theft

Foreign researchers routinely harvest data and samples from Africa, analyse them abroad, and publish without meaningful African authorship. Africa provides the problems; the world takes the credit and the citations.

📉

Economic Policy Without Evidence

African economies are modelled and advised by institutions and economists who have never lived here. Without our own published data and research, we cannot effectively argue for our own economic interests at global tables.

🌍

Invisible at Global Policy Tables

Scientific publications determine who shapes global health policy, climate agreements, agricultural standards, and development frameworks. At 2% of global output, Africa is largely invisible where it matters most.

🎓

The Knowledge Loop Broken

Without a culture of publishing, Africa's universities cannot generate the citations, rankings, or international recognition needed to attract funding, partnerships, or the world's best minds back home.

"I have been convinced that research on the health problems of Africa should be led by African scientists. The world has not only failed to listen — Africa itself has not yet acted with the urgency this demands."

The Response — AREC 2026

Training Researchers.
Funding Publications.
Changing the Count.

AREC 2026 is not just a training programme. It is a deliberate, data-driven movement to shift Africa's place in the global knowledge economy — one published paper at a time.

Delivered jointly by the International Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Research (IIAR) and Veristzon Research Lab, AREC 2026 equips every enrolled scholar with the AI tools, research skills, and methodological rigour needed to produce publication-ready research.

Every scholar who completes the programme is required to publish at least one peer-reviewed paper. This is not optional — it is the programme's core commitment to Africa's knowledge future. With 1,000,000 scholars in our sights, that means 1,000,000 new African-authored publications entering the global scientific record.

To incentivise the very best work, IIAR has created a ₦1,000,000 Research Grant Award — rewarding the top three published papers from each cohort. The grant is not a gift. It is a declaration: African research is worth funding, celebrating, and competing for.

As a selected scholar, you also earn the AI Certified Specialist in Academic Research (ASAR) designation — a globally recognised credential backed by IIAR's worldwide network.

Deserves to Be Rewarded.

Every scholar who completes the programme publishes at least one paper. The top three publications from each cohort — judged by IIAR's independent academic panel on quality, originality, and impact — win life-changing cash awards.

Total Prize Pool Per Cohort

1 Scholar = 1 Publication.
1,000,000 Scholars = 1,000,000 African Papers.

Every AREC scholar is required to publish at least one peer-reviewed paper as part of their programme completion. This is not a bonus — it is the standard. At scale, this single requirement will generate more African-authored academic publications than any initiative in the continent's history.

Africa currently produces <2% of global research. AREC is building the pipeline to change that number — permanently.

The Numbers Are Clear.
The Need Is Urgent.
The Time Is Now.

Africa has 1.4 billion people and produces less than 2% of the world's research. We have already trained 20,000 scholars and proven the model works. Now we need partners — institutions, organisations, governments, companies — who understand that changing Africa's research output changes Africa's future.

"Africa has no shortage of brilliance. What it has lacked is access — access to tools, training, and the networks that convert talent into published knowledge. Every scholar we train is a researcher who writes, publishes, and adds Africa's voice to a global record that has excluded us for too long."

"We have proved the model with 20,000. Now we are asking you: join us in reaching 1,000,000. Not because it is charitable — because it is strategic, impactful, and necessary."
